The Air Quality Almaty team is a passionate group of students focused on combating the high levels of air pollution in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty. Globally, 4.2 million people die every year from air pollution related causes. In fact, 99% of the world’s population suffers from air pollution. In Kazakhstan, 80% of the country’s power comes from coal-fired power plants, with some of the biggest plants being located just outside Almaty. The consequence? Air pollution in Almaty is well above the global average, and people are dying because of it. The solution? Educate people on what they can do to protect themselves.
Operating under the Office of Creative Inquiry, our team’s goal is to put together an app for people in Almaty that will give personalized advice to help protect themselves from air pollution. We will be traveling to Almaty in May of this year to face this problem head on. Our team will be working with other college students in the city to get hands-on research on air pollution and continue our strategies to reduce the number of air pollution related hospitalizations.
Your contributions will make a difference in the lives of thousands of people. From funding travel to funding app development, each donation helps us achieve our goal, and ultimately, save lives.
