Major Curriculum

The major consists of eleven courses for a total of 44 credits. This is the minimum, however, and we strongly urge students to enrich their education by going further. The required courses are as follows:

Introductory courses (two courses, 8 credits)

  • IR 10: Introduction to World Politics (4)
  • Eco 1: Principles of Economics (4)

Core courses (4 courses, 16 credits)

  • IR 100  Methods and Research Design 

and one course from three of the following functional groups:

  • Theory & Policy
    • IR 105: Theories of International Relations (4)
    • IR 210  Foreign Policy (4)
  • International Political Economy
    • IR 220: Globalization and World Politics (4) 
    • IR 223  Work & Labor in a Global Economy (4)
    • IR 225: International Political Economy (4)
  • International Security Studies
    • IR 234: Great Power Politics (4) or
    • IR 235: International Security (4)
    • IR 236  Causes of War (4)
    • IR 237  National Security: The Military Instrument of Foreign Policy
  • International Governance
    • IR 245: International Organization (4)

Advanced courses (two courses, 8 credits)

  • Any IR courses numbered 301-387 (except IR 307) and 393.

Elective courses (three courses, 12 credits)

  • Any IR courses other than IR 19, IR 002, 90, 300, 388 or 391. Core or advanced courses beyond the minimum requirements may be counted as electives. Certain courses offered by other departments may also qualify. Please see below:
